In Mike Resnick's, short story, Robot's Don't Cry, there were 5 robots described. Sammy, the nursemaid is really the only one that mattered. The other 4 were referred to as "Mechs" with a number and they belonged to the unnamed treasure hunters (Archer and Pahn in my film). These robots had very minor roles. I reduced the number of robots to 2 "Mechs" and gave them a little more character because the story gave these 2 some hints of personality. So Mech 3 and Mech 7 ended up in the screenplay. In the original story, there was an unnamed Mech that only provided lunch and a Mech 8 that helped Mech 7 with an important chore. In the screenplay, Archer and Pahn didn't ate lunch and Mech 3 ended up helping Mech 7 with the important chore. It worked out beautifully, and I saved a lot of time not creating 3d models and animations of these very minor characters.
There were no detailed descriptions of the robots' physical descriptions. I used a combination of the personalities I invented and browsing dozens of images of robots on the internet to get some inspiration. In Robots Don't Cry, Sammy was described as a robot "in the image of a human being". My interpretation was not literal. It wouldn't work if the robot looked exactly human. He had to look mechanical. My "human image" interpretation was the abstract shape of a human: head, arms, legs, 10 fingers, 10 toes, 2 eyes, ears, mouth, etc. It didn't have to have hair, flesh colored skin, nails, lips, nostrils, etc.
It didn't take too much time at all to complete the robots, especially Mechs 3 and 7. The Mechs took about half an hour each to complete. It took another half hour to texture. I had a lot of fun creating them as I had improved my skills in making 3d objects that are not animal.
